Onyx marble is also used in countertops, flooring, fireplace surrounds, tabletops, staircases, sculptures, and custom furniture, for adding a luxurious and glowing effect (rather than for durability).

FAQs

1. Is onyx the onyx marble that supports backlit applications? +

Although onyx and marble have many common applications, they are different. Onyx is a distinct translucent stone. But it is not the only stone with backlit applications. Certain varieties of marble, quartzite, and alabaster also support backlighting.

2. Is onyx marble good for areas receiving high-foot traffic? +

No, onyx is not recommended for areas receiving high-foot traffic or impact. It is softer, more porous, and more susceptible to chipping, scratching, and staining compared to marble and granite. The application of onyx is mainly for adding a sense of luxury with backlighting.

3. How to clean and maintain onyx marble? +

You should seal the surface of onyx every 1 to 2 years using quality stone sealers. This helps present water absorption and staining. You should clean onyx daily using a soft microfiber cloth. You can use mild soap or a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals and wipe spills immediately. It is also recommended to use trivets and coasters under hot items and glasses to protect the surface of onyx.

4. Is onyx more expensive than marble and granite? +

Yes, onyx is more expensive than most granite and marble in general. This is due to its rarity and delicate handling requirements during quarrying and installation.
