Types of Sandstone Available to Elevate Your Space
At Vardhman Sagar Marbles, you can find a variety of popular sandstone options. The unique colours, patterns, textures, and finishes make them versatile, with uses ranging from flooring and cladding to paving, walling, and sculpting.
Here is the overview of the common types of sandstone available at Vardhman Sagar Marbles:
| Colours Available | Textures Available | Finishes Available |
| Red: Offers deep, rich red hues for creating striking designs and adding elegance. (E.g., Dholpur Red Sandstone, Red Sandstone) | Fine Grain: The grains have a diameter between 0.0625 mm and 0.25 mm. The stones have small pores and a smooth feel. | Rough/Flamed: A highly-textured, raw finish achieved through sandblasting, gang sawing, and hydra-splitting. It offers excellent slip resistance. |
| Yellow/Golden: Comes with warm golden and amber tones that are great for creating a cosy ambience. (E.g., Yellow Sandstone, Fluted Yellow Sandstone) | Medium Grain: The diameter of the grains ranges from 0.25 mm to 0.5 mm. This is the standard grain size, and the stone feels gritty or sand-like to the touch. | Leathered: A subtle, pebbly texture with matte-like finish, achieved by brushing the surface with hard plastic or diamond-tipped brushes. It is great for concealing minor imperfections and fingerprints. |
| Rainbow: Features multi-colour patterns that create a unique, earthy look. (E.g., Rainbow Sandstone) | Coarse Grain: The grains have a diameter between 0.5 mm and 2 mm. The stones come with large pores that are easily visible. They feel rough and granular when touched. | Polished/Honed: A smooth, glossy, and highly reflective finish, achieved through repeated abrasive treatments that close pores. It is great for adding elegance to low-traffic areas where slipping is not a concern. |
| Beige/Brown: Comes with warm tones that create a neutral and creamy appearance. (E.g., Travertine Stone, Sandstone Slabs) | Fluted: Shallow, vertical, and parallel grooves carved on the stone for an architectural rather than natural texture. The patterns look and feel dimensional and rhythmic. | Clear Cast: A thick, durable, and glass-like transparent layer of resin or epoxy, applied as a protective coating. It is great for protecting the stone’s surface with a high-gloss finish. |
| Ivory: Adds elegance to spaces with light shades and a subtle, uniform white and sometimes off-white hue. (E.g., Travertine Stone) | Travertine: A distinct type of rock that is often grouped as sandstone, has visible holes and cavities left by trapped gas or organic matter. The stones feel rugged and porous to the touch. | Natural Split/Cleft: Layered stones split along their natural fault lines to create a slightly uneven rustic surface with gentle ridges. It is great for achieving an extremely textured and slip-resistant, naturally occurring look. |

FAQs
Yes, the colour of sandstone can gradually fade over time due to prolonged weathering and exposure to direct sunlight. The stone will get a “weathered” character as years pass.
Travertine is often grouped as sandstone due to similarities in appearance. Both types of rocks come with neutral tones and porosity. The two types are also used as pavers, with many other common applications. Both are sedimentary rocks, where travertine is based on calcium carbonate, and sandstone on silica.
Maintaining sandstone requires regular sweeping for the removal of loose dirt and debris. You should also mop with warm water and use pH-neutral, non-acidic cleaners with a soft-bristle brush. You can also use a stone-specific cleaner with a nylon pad. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach, vinegar, and hydrochloric acid.
Sealing is not an absolute necessity, but something highly recommended. It protects sandstones and extends their longevity. It also guards against the colour fading caused by constant weathering and sun exposure.
